hermit crabs are popular pets for adults and children alike for many years, and there are many who appreciate their unique beauty (and just as many do-it is a matter for taste). With the growing popularity of bringing a piece of the sea in the house it's no wonder that the notion of putting the hermit crabs in a saltwater aquarium is gaining in popularity.
Just as there are many species of hermit crabs that can be kept as pets, so are there many different breeds that can be maintained aquarium. Not all have identical chances of survival if it is kept captive, even so, and it is important that the owner of the aquarium to ensure that they are familiar with all the specific needs of their hermit crabs before they are introduced into the aquarium. Below is an introduction to just the most general type of aquarium hermit crabs.
- Red Hermit Crab (Dardanus megistos) - Also referred to as a White Spotted Hermit Crabs this cancer has red legs with charcoal-edged spots. This is certainly the reef aquarium, but it is very helpful in keeping algae growth to a minimum in the community aquarium. Only one crab per tank please, these crabs are very protective of their personal space
.- red leg hermit crabs (Clibanarius digueti)-these are Mexican crabs hardy addition to any aquarium, eating algae from the tank. They require low levels of copper in the water, though, as their bodies can not survive in the presence of this metal.
- Scarlet Hermit Crabs, Reef or crab (Paguristes Cadenat)-This crab generally remains small, about two ins across, and has a red body with yellow eyestalks. They are very useful in accordance rapid growth of algae inside the aquarium in check, however, if insufficient algae for sale inside the tank must be supplementally fed with dried seaweed
.- Daily Cancer (bernhardus pagurus)-These crabs every day in Europe, but can be found in other countries as well. Also referred to as soldier crabs.
Since these crabs carry their homes around lying on your back, it is important that they constantly have new shells to sell them when they outgrew their previous shell. improperly sized crustaceans in the shell can not grow properly. These shells can be purchased from a pet store or online retailer, or, if the owner of knowledge about the demands of their crabs, clams, and regularly can be found on the beach. If the owner decides to go out into nature and collect their own individual shells is important to choose the correct type of crab shell for their abode. As sea anemones are often an important part of the natural environment crabs make excellent tank friends, eating the remains of the crab when the meal is over and the scraping of the tank waste.
Hermit crabs are an intriguing addition to any tank, and require very little maintenance once their owners are satisfied with their needs and their characteristics.
